Goodwin's Theory
Music Videos Demonstrate Genre Characteristics
There are certain types of music that use certain types of images or style, for example a stage performance in a heavy rock/metal video or a dance routine for a girl or boy band.
This occurs in such videos as 'All My Life' by Foo Fighters where the band are performing on stage as they would when playing live.
There is a link Between Lyrics and Visuals
They are either illastrative and illistrate what the lyrics say, or they are amplifying and they exaggerate the lyrics. There is also the contadiction element where the visuals are contrapuntal to the lyrics.
An example of this is the music video for Arctic Monkeys' 'Crying Lightening' where we see that lightening is included in the video through lyrics and images.
There is a Relationship Between Music and Visuals
If the video is illastrative the video could be amplifying of contradicting.
The Rhythm, instrumentation and nbotation create visual interpretation.
The record label demand that there is lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work.
There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. (Screens within screens and telescopes etc)
There is Often Intertextual Reference
The video may spoof or pay homage to films, TV pograms, other music videos etc.
Nirvana's video for their 1992 released single 'In Bloom' does this by parody of musical performances of 1960s variety shows.
Here is a video of me analysing the music video for the Horrors' single 'Who Can Say'
Here is my preliminary video. I made this as a practise before my real video, to help me increase my knowledge of the conventions of music videos and to get to grips with filming.
